A GALLA Project Inspection of Kitebi Primary and Kigoba Primary School.
The GALLA project team, led by Mr. Aggery from the Solid Waste Management Department in Lubaga, recently visited two public schools, Kitebi Primary School in Kabowa and Kigoba Namungona Primary School in Lubya. The team aimed to inspect waste management practices and identify areas for improvement.

A Common Challenge;
Waste management is a ubiquitous challenge in many government institutions. Often, the system relies on the presence of authority figures to function effectively. However, during our visit, we observed that the schools had made some progress in establishing waste management structures.
A New Partnership;
The GALLA project team, representing the National Slum Dwellers Federation, introduced themselves to the headteachers of the two schools. The project’s focus on locally led adaptations to climate change, particularly in solid waste management, was well-received by the school administrators.
Key Findings;
Our inspection revealed that both schools had established collection sites for waste and provided small bins for garbage control. However, despite these efforts, significant challenges remained, including:
- Limited sensitisation, There was a notable gap in awareness about best practices in waste management among students and staff.
- Inadequate infrastructure: The schools lacked sufficient resources and infrastructure to effectively manage waste.
Existing Structures;
Despite these challenges, the schools had established some promising structures, including:

- Environmental clubs; These clubs promote environmental awareness and sustainability.
- Sanitation committees; These committees oversee waste management and sanitation efforts.
- Urban farming initiatives; Some schools had initiated urban farming projects, which could be leveraged for waste management
Looking forward;
The GALLA project aims to support these schools in improving their waste management practices. Over the next five years, the project will
- Train and sensitise: Provide training and sensitisation on waste management best practices.
Support infrastructure development: Provide resources and support for infrastructure development, such as waste sorting banks and biogas plants.
Promote innovation: Encourage innovative solutions, such as waste-to-wealth initiatives.
By working together, we can empower schools to effectively manage waste and contribute to a more sustainable future.
